Thank you JPLenny for your informed explanation of our rocking Earth. I'm still unnerved by it all whether earthquakes are just a fact of nature or man caused. But it is comforting (?) to think this is just a normal occurence, Somehow. I'm having a real hard time being comforted about all those people being hurt because they chose to inhabit and make a living in an area that was near that spot on the map, some of which is no more You are welcome. I knew those college classes would pay off someday. :-)I'll answer the questions on California and the jet stream in a message with a new header. I think a lot of people are expressing thier feelings and thought in this thread and I don't want to dillute it with another science lesson. It's hard to be critical of anyone living anywhere. You live where you can subsist and survive. Almost anyplace on the earth is subject to natural disasters. Water tends to be a source of food and transportation, thus there is the tendancies for humans to live close to thier resources, along rivers, lakes, and oceans. JP
