Thanks for the replies. I will try some other apps. After deleting the podcast app the phone no longer uses excessive data. The app must have been doing something really screwy since it used 4GB of data while my phone only has 3GB of free space after removing the app. And since an hour of audio is about 25MB, 4GB represents 160 hours of podcasts! I didn't subscribe to any podcasts, just grabbed a few individual ones, so it should not have used much data at all, whether wifi or not.
