Consider a collection of data that are related to each other (employees at a company, office locations within the company). The RDBMS manages the relationships between all of the data and ensures that changes in one area are propagated to other areas (or rejected altogether). If you think of an excel worksheet as a single unit of data, the RDBMS is the plumbing that relates that sheet to other sheets in your universe of information, and gives you an interface for viewing and changing the data. Fascinating stuff. Excel was never designed to enforce these rules. It is a matrix calculator.
