That's been SOP in government agencies since my father got close to retirement age, back in 1980 or so. Not laying off as much as stepping up the misery: sudden change in job duties, demoting in everything but name (taking away support staff, direct reports, offices), etc. Anybody they can harass into leaving is a pension saved.

In g'ment retirement, with that many years, you could still get a pension, though you'd have to do something else for income until you hit 55. I'm guessing a private corporation has ways around that.

It's crappy but effective. Whoever they hire to replace him will probably cost quite a bit less, plus not having to pay out a pension.

Seems very unethical to me, but it happens a lot.
