That's probably because Apple is pushing their cloud storage. I'll give that a few more years for vendors offering cloud storage to improve security and fail-safe features.

I used my optical drive just before Thanksgiving to upgrade my PC from XP to Windows 7. Re-installing all your applications via downloads could take forever! All my data was backed up to an external hard drive, however. That's much faster than writing a bunch of DVDs.

I have a laptop that doesn't have a hard drive. I was able to install Win7 via a USB flash drive. My work computer doesn't have a CD drive and hasn't been a problem for almost a year (and before then it was only a problem when clients sent us files on CD - my docking station had the CD drive built in, which makes the laptop lighter).

My wife's laptop/desktop HAVE CD drives, but I can't remember the last time we used them. For my desktop, I've used it more recently for older games that are on CD; although all new games that I've purchased in the last few years was digital download. (For that matter, even the software applications I have on disc recently was available for digital download if I wanted to, but I was able to get student pricing via a vender that sold it physically)
