The best option is to roll the holdings over to an IRA. If you go with somebody like Schwab, you will have lots of options in terms of both mutual funds, bonds, and stocks.

Also, remember that the losses taken in the stock market were not unavoidable. Stocks fluctuate, of course, but in general the market tends to trend. Watch the charts, look at the technical indicators, and do not hesitate to go to cash when the market begins to trend downward.
