We come to know our friends and family by listening to them. Through listening we grow to understand who they are and what they are like. The same is true of Christ. To confess Christ we must first know Christ. We come to know Christ only by listening to God communicate to us in the Bible. If we refuse to read the Bible or to accept the Bible as altogether trustworthy, we can never really know and confess Christ; he is forever lost to us. It is absolutely essential, therefore, that we know just what the Bible is and why it is important. The Bible is the very foundation of Christianity. Upon that foundation depends our eternal destiny. We must therefore carefully examine this foundation of the Christian faith and life - the Bible.

The Word of God

The world Bible means "book." It is called the "holy" Bible because is is set apart from all other books as sacred. It is commonly called the "Word of God." But what do we mean by calling the Bible "God's Word?" We mean that God is the author, the word that he speaks is his word. Just as your word is what comes from you, so God's Word is the word that comes from him. The creeds of Christianity all confess that the Bible is "inspired" and "infallible." The word inspired means "God-breathed." When we say that the Bible is inspired, we mean that God breathed into the writers of Scripture his thoughts and words. What they wrote was not merely a product of their own minds and hearts; they wrote God's thoughts and words as revealed to them by God's Holy Spirit. Thus the Bible is infallible. The original writings as recorded in Hebrew and in Greek are free from all error; every word as well as every thought is true.
