The Chicago Art Institute Museum has free admission on Tuesdays. At other times the "suggested" admission fee is $10, but if you feel you can't afford that much, the rule is "Pay what you wish but you must pay something."

The Chicago Cultural Center hosts free concerts (chamber music, jazz, etc.) with their "Lunchbreak" programs (12:15 to 1:00 weekdays) as well as concerts on Sunday afternoons (3:00) and other times. I've attended a number of these and they are very good. An added bonus is getting to admire the spectacular architecture of their main domed auditorium. The Center also hosts free art exhibits as well.

Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo and neighboring Lincoln Park Conservatory are also free at all times, and are a great way to spend a nice, relaxing sunny afternoon.
