the current investment climate is so forbidding that I am not at all sure how to do it.

Harry,

I'd keep it simple. Pay off your house, then invest 50% of your wealth in Vanguard's Total Market Stock fund, 25% in their Total Bond Fund, and 25% in a CD ladder.

You'll sleep better at night, will be less prone to buying and selling, will have more free time, and will probably end up with a higher portfolio value with your money in two or three simple to understand investments.

Some possible variations here: use an ETF instead of Vanguard, and add an international fund (perhaps 25% of your total stock allocation) to the mix.
