The dealer must be suggesting more services that are not needed or maintenance was neglected to the point of needing an unscheduled repair.

or has had a random failure. My car has had a door lock problem and the radio fail. Both were very annoying, but didn't prevent the car from being driven. The radio would randomly start turning up the volume while disabling the volume control knob. It was really annoying.

Both would have not been cheap if they hadn't been covered by an extended service plan, but haven't exceeded its cost. We bought the extended service plan because of the amount of electronics in a Prius and both of the problems have been mechanical.
