The federal late filing penalty is based on the amount owed.

I made a small error on my taxes once, and was notified by the IRS over a year later. I settled up and my penalties and interest were only 3 bucks and change, so they cleared my account to zero automatically. Probably costs more than that to process a payment and send a confirmation.

So if you were 1 day late I would imagine that you're unlikely to have a problem unless you owe a very large amount.

Still, best to file on the 15th :)
