The government does not force you to buy insurance. That is your choice. But it taxes you more if you don't.
It taxes you more if you don't buy a home.
...
Two very different things Peter. My wife and I are in the 28% tax bracket. The government provides an incentive through the tax code for us to reduce that rate by purchasing a home, etc. As an aside, I personally think all these loopholes should be done away with and have the rates lowered, but that's another topic.
The ACA, however, doesn't provide that incentive. What the ACA does is essentially penalize you for not purchasing insurance. The tax label is total bullsh1t. So it becomes buy this or else. Now let's pretend for a moment that my wife and I have no deductions and pay the full 28% income tax. Our nominal rate will go up if we don't participate in the health insurance market, hence, making it a fine not a tax.
So, at the end of the day, what we have is the US government dictating commerce. I really don't care how people try to spin it. The Democrats have exerted additional control over the lives of US citizens via a very different method leading to a loss of liberty. I'll say it again. If they wanted UHC, they should have raised and appropriated taxes to get there.
