The negotiated insurance rate for the visit and treatment is a little over $1000 - which I have already paid since we have a high deductible policy. But if the insurance company declares the treatment invalid, then the non-insured cost of the emergency room visit is over $6000. Note that the insurance company does not pay one dime either way. The hospital was originally happy with my payment. But now, they want me to pay more if the insurance company denies the claim - a claim that is in question because of the code their doctor put on the paperwork.

I would tell them to go pound sand. Then I would threaten legal action for medical malpractice. Then I would research who is the chief of staff at the hospital, who are the board members at the hospital, who is the president of the health insurance company, and who are the prominent state regulators, all of these people would get a letter. Then if a collection agency came after me I would insist on a lawsuit with a jury trial.

Free market based health care is a joke, treatment and outcome deteriorate while hospitals, insurance carriers, and investors get wealthier. Who is exactly benefiting for our current system? Do the math, follow the money, then you will understand why change is so vehemently opposed.
