Prior to the civil war, many activists cooperated to assist fleeing slaves in their attempt to reach Canada where they would be safe. This chain of safe houses was called the underground railroad.

Quakers were proud members of this chain of persons who had more regard for natural rights than law.

Now the US Congress wants to stop pregnant girls who do not wish to bear a child from reaching safe harbor.

Under the bill, anyone who helps a pregnant minor cross state lines to obtain an abortion without the knowledge of her parents could be punished by unspecified fines and up to a year in prison. The girl and her parents would not be vulnerable to criminal penalties. The measure contains an exception for those who help underage girls get such abortions to avoid life-threatening conditions.

I said yesterday that one of the defining attributes of persons who lean to the left is the willingness to go against established authority in the service of fundamental rights. This is a great example.

If a pregnant minor girl whom I knew came to me and pleaded with me to drive her to DC for an abortion so she didn't run the risk of getting beat up by her abusive father, I would take her.

I would take her regardless of what the US Congress does.
