The over saturation of the news media on the Marathon bombing at least got the media ... Not only were more people killed in West (12 including a third of the voluntary fire department) and an equivalent number of people injured, but the physical damage was more extensive.

Everyone knows the old newspaper mantra "If it bleeds it leads."

Then TV came along and the mantra became "Film at eleven." because it took time to develop the film taken at the scene.

But now with video and remote repeaters (even satellite sometimes) the new TV mantra is "Coming to you live!"

The west Texas explosion lasted only seconds and was captured on only one far away phone camera. Everything after that was pictures of the damage and wounded people being helped. i.e. not all that exciting.

The Boston bombings, however, were captured live as the bombs went off with lots of coverage of the bloody aftermath.

Then came the late night shootout that killed a cop but didn't get much coverage because there wasn't any video coverage.

Then, finally, every news director's dream: a live house to house hunt for the bad guy!

The news media's mantra has changed from: "If it bleeds it leads" to "If we've got video of it it leads."
