The problem with socialism and liberalism is that they're both drenched in emotion. They can't think straight from all the "feelings" they bring to any discussion. Math means nothing to them, or if it means anything at all, it's useful only for determining how much of my money they can take to give to someone else, in many cases with few questions asked. Why are we handing out Social Security, SS survivor's benefits, unemployment, tax rebates and everything else you can think of to people who don't need it? Why do we force everyone into Medicare? Why not let people who wish to buy private insurance do so, and keep Medicare for those who can't or don't want to? Why do we force both spouses to apply for Social Security, even if one isn't old enough? Everyone in government, from Washington on down, needs to get into a savings mode and out of a spending mode. For cryin' out loud, even Jesus Christ said, "The poor will always be with you."* All the characteristics that made this country great--self-determination, resilience, indomitable spirit, generosity, etc.--have been slowly drained out of the citizenry through government intervention (FDR's New Deal, 1933-1936; LBJ's Great Society) to FORCE people to demonstrate a twisted version of "compassion" that is more genuinely manifest individually.Sure, I feel good when I help someone, but I feel nothing but rage when I pay taxes to an inept government that squanders my hard earned money to do the same thing I would do on my own. But because the government taxes me severely, I have less money to help others. How perverse is that?*The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. Mark 14:7
