Food for thought:

Heaven:
The word "heaven" appears hundreds of times in the bible. Some of these refer to the sky above as in Gen 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

"Heaven," used to refer to a place where God is found, is also used hundreds of times.

"Hell," "Lake of Fire," etc:
The word "hell" appears 35 times in the NKJV. Interestingly, it is not used even once in the Book of Revelation.

"Pit," or "bottomless pit" is used in Revelation 7 times.

"Pit is used frequently throughout the NKJV Bible, sometimes to refer to an actual pit; others as a reference to "hell."

"Lake of fire," another "hell" euphemism which is unique to Revelation is used 5 times.

"Sheol" is used 33 times.

Obviously, lots of scriptural references to these two ultimate outcomes for our souls: "heaven;" and "hell" by whatever name you call it.

Purgatory:

Question:
Why would this be? Why would God leave out from the scriptures such a key part of our afterlife if it really is what some have in store for them enroute to heaven? Why only oblique scriptural references cited in support of the doctrine? Why not the same direct treatment as "heaven" and "hell"?

***FWIW: All searching done on the Bible Gateway's NKJV, which is online at:
