The sad reality is that there is little to nothing we do to the Middle East short of war.

Through intelligent use of our resources we managed to keep a lid on the powder keg for a very very long time.

We were likely on the verge of once again controlling thing through the backdoor when we decided that it was time to allow the free folks to express themselves.

You can like or dislike the Machiavellian traditions of the US in the Middle East, but they worked quite well for us, the world and from the look of things better than otherwise for the folk in the Middle East as well. This region has been exporting violence since before the Crusades, so please none of this it is the US's fault. We had it as good as it had ever been and were going about re-establishing that, through some serious carrot stick stuff.

Sure we can not admit any of that, and that's not how it worked. But, it sure as heck when it wasn't<sad grin> like that, was a lot safer for the folks of the Middle East, the US and the rest of the world, and it also essentially excluded our more powerful enemies from exerting their wills.

Congratulations America, change.
