The Spinster School teacher working for low wages story is getting outdated for these 10 month with multi week holiday vaction schedules. Yes, I know teachers work at night doing lesson plans and grading, and sometimes go to school in the summer, but my wife is a nurse and must complete I forget how many course credits each year to keep her license.

funny. i was reading the same article at educationnext when i saw your reply.

perhaps you're right. perhaps nursing should pay better, too. my belief is based on having two teachers in my family, both with advanced degrees and a combined 40 years experience in the field. i've got an undergraduate degree in a field unrelated to my job (technology) and 7 years experience and earn more than both of them.

and i'm certain that if you add up the hours they work in 10 months they're at least equivalent to the hours i work in 12.

i also know a number of teachers that spend their summers working in other jobs to make ends meet.

still, thanks for the thoughtful and informative reply. i might have to reconsider my opinion.
