The term "Reformed" comes from God raising up men during the 15th-16th century, to end the absolute control and oppression of the Roman Catholic Church (visible church) and the burden of works it had placed upon those who would profess the name of Jesus Christ (true, invisible church). We attribute the Reformation to the working of God's Holy Spirit, for as we stated above, men (plural) were raised up within the same time period (1470's), having the same spiritual motivation and faith to bring the events about.Prior to Luther, there had been occasional attempts throughout the dominance of the Church of Rome, by individuals confronting and protesting various errors, both in practice and doctrine; however, all to little avail. But in the days of the Reformation, history records a sweeping movement, which we believe could only have been supernatural and from God.There were four Christian theologians who predominated and had the most influence: Luther led the German Reformation, Zwingli led the Swiss Reformation, Calvin led the French Reformation, and John Knox leaned of and took the doctrines of the Protestants to Scotland. Also, there were lay people who revolted against the church's practice of baptizing infants, who separated and formed autonomous groups, who were named the "Anabaptists."The Reformation was not the thinking of a lone person, but rather, many Christians were raised up contemporaneously to revive and restore the church of Jesus Christ in the truths of the Holy Scriptures.J&R
