The thing I can't decide if it's stupid is listening to MP3's on earphones while riding alone. I really enjoy it, but it does distract from my ability to listen for cars coming from behind (I do have a mirror). It wouldn't seem worse than listening to the radio in a car, where you really can't hear a car coming from behind either.

If you can't hear cars approaching then it is stupid. I'd recommend either riding with only one side in or use something like this:
