The total number of mortgage applications filed in the U.S. last week slipped 5.2% as some interest rates crept higher, the Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday.

What I think would be more appropriate to track would be the trend in the ratio between mortgage applications and loan approvals. I don't know how to do it and don't have the inclination to spend time learning how, but think it would be more meaningful to track the trend.
