The VITA site manager told me that "various" is always long term, and I was expected to have actual purchase dates for short term. Fortunately, I had only one purchase lot that was short term, so I didn't go nuts trying to figure out how to tell TaxWise that a "various" purchase was really short term.

Unfortunately I can top your site manager. When I went to training this year the instructor had the nerve not only to say that various is always LT, but also to say it made no difference. Not being a good student when I know more than the instructor, I blurted out "Wrong on both counts!"

Over a break I did a "what if" comparison for him (you have to override the L/S field in TaxWise) and showed him it did, indeed, make a difference (because of the favored rate treatment of LTCG's).
