As a member of the non-for-profit world myself (My paycheck definitely demonstrates why they call it NOT for profit), I have thought long and hard about my Foolish nomination. I have decided upon Women's EDGE.

As their website ( aptly states,"Women's EDGE is a dynamic coalition of individuals and respected organizations that is giving women and families around the world an economic edge."

Women's EDGE strives to affect positive change for women in developing countries (and those women in the "developed" countries who are living in poverty) by giving their issues representation to U.S. policymakers (i.e. Congress). Women's EDGE is the first organization of its kind. It gives a voice to women worldwide who traditionally have had little to no say in U.S. global politics, but who are often the ones most profoundly affected by these policies.

The women and men of Women's EDGE EDUCATES by providing the latest information on how women who live in poverty worldwide are being affected by U.S. programs and policies. In addition to the U.S. Congress, Women's EDGE EDUCATES international aid agencies, domestic women's groups, human rights organizations, think tanks, grassroots activist groups and universities as well as the impoverished women themselves. Additionally, in several states around the U.S., Women's EDGE is developing groups of local activists to educate their communities and political leaders about how the U.S. can help women and girls globally.

Women's EDGE AMUSES or incites productive action among people of many ethnicities, nationalities and political persuasions by providing the information and access needed to play a part in the decision-making process. In addition to alerting the world's citizens (primarily through the miracle of the Internet) when their voices can make a real difference in the decisions affecting women, girls and their families, Women's EDGE also works to bring the voices of women from the developing world to U.S. policymakers and regularly collaborates with women's organizations from other nations in this endeavor.

Women's EDGE ENRICHES by bringing diverse groups together to integrate the needs and views of the world's mothers, sisters and wives into all international aid programs the U.S. conducts. While trade and economic globalization have a tremendous potential to improve women's lives, the U.S. sometimes pursues trade policies that can double women's workloads and lead to increased poverty to these women, their communities and their families.

Women's EDGE deserves a close look by all in Fooldom. Not only does it help the world's poor, but Women's EDGE also helps the world's richest nation in its leadership role to create sustainable solutions for the citizens of the earth for generations to come.
