Not sure I can help anyone sound intelligent, but one of the questions that has been hotly debated many times is whether Lowes and HD benefit or suffer during a housing slump.

On the one hand, during a slump you have less flippers and people sprucing up their property to sell. On the other hand, if people recognize they will be in their current home for several years, they may be willing to invest more to make improvements.

Personally, I always favor the latter argument, but if you bring it up (and have some numbers to back up your position), I'd keep you in the club...
