There is so much turnover, change, and development each year in the NFL that it's really not out of line to expect good things from your team. If you accept failure and mediocrity then you are more likely to get it.

The 1998 Rams went 4-12, last in their division, and the very next year with a new QB they romped to a relatively easy Super Bowl crown. That's the extreme case but it can happen and it's not that unusual to see a last to first division change in one year. If a team is in such disarray that they have no hope of making the playoffs next year it's time to fire the entire organization and coaching staff right now.
