There several good articles in the fool.com archives dealing with the 5% solution and using the twenty factor that deals with this question. These articles started during 1997 reacting to Peter Lynche's article, The five percent solution, in the Worth magazine, 1996. I have developed an Excel spreadsheet called, When Can I Retire that helps you answer this important question. If you would email at;
