There was an estimated 40 million deaths during the 19th century.

WWII - 50 million
Mao Zedong - 48 million
Stalin - 20 million, with 100 million estimated killed under Communist Russia
WWI - 15 million

Now, why was the period 1815 to 1914 more peaceful?

Because there were a lot fewer people in the 1800's as compared to the 1900's. Plus the technological advances in the art of killing. Oh yeah, and the continuing trend in the targeting of civilians during wars (carpet bombing cities, etc.).
