Also to Pete - your guesses are both correct in my estimation. And I assume responsibility.

I did not tell the tax preparer about the situation in sufficient detail. I said something about funds coming from the IRA and I probably said said the funds went from Schwab directly. But I certainly did not emphasize that. I am a few hundred miles from the preparer and all the "documents" were digital. (The tax preparer is a long time friend of our friend. I probably would not pick that person from the pros available. But when you assist an elderly person with limitations, but full mental capacity not all decisions are ours to make.)
