There's nothing that says kids can't take the ACT/SAT earlier than their junior year. My kids took it first in 8th grade through the Duke TIP program and I've had them take it once a year since then.

I think it not only gets them comfortable with the test and testing process, but shows them what areas they may want to work on (due to low scores).

I can happily say my daughter (who is now a junior) has increased her ACT every time she has taken it. The same can be said for my son, a freshman.

OBTW - I heartily agree that rigourous course work is crucial to the college application process. Somewhere in this thread I read that kids can go to private schools at about the same price as state U and from what we've found in this process it is true, that is as long as you have a good ACT/SAT score and good class rank (for merit scholarships).
