They fear science they don't want to believe in. They imagine some sort of global conspiracy.

Perhaps at some level they're aware that their side gins up support for false/stupid siht and therefore assume that scientists are like them--listeners to their "masters," more interested in "winning" and doing what benefits themselves in the short short term than figuring out the truth and then trying to do the right thing about it. What little they understand about the scientific method is laughable to them--so they accuse scientists and those of us inclined to accept what scientists say rather than what conservative bloviators say, of "worshipping nature" or believing in global warming religion or some such nonsense.
