They say Walter Winchell dominated radio and was very powerful until he took on Jack Paar and the Tonight Show. Jack won their feud and convinced people that the power of radio was on the wane.

Paul Harvey lasted longer and is well known for his adventures climbing fences at Argonne National Laboratories. He did more flag waving. And was patriotic.

But I suspect Paul Harvey was more popular in the midwest; Walter Winchell was popular on the all powerful coasts. Now we would say he was bicoastal.
