I'm new here and to investing. Just joined up.

My wife rolled her 401k into an IRA that we rolled into a Roth last year and paid the taxes on this year.

Our advisor convinced us to invest in American Funds Small Cap. That is costing us the max, 5.75%.

If I've been reading and understanding right, we'd probably do better in Index Funds, such as Vanguard S&P 500 and Vanguard Growth Fund. We're in our mid 30's so, I figure a 25%/75% mix respectively. Any comments?

If this sounds right then how do we transfer from American to Vanguard. Can we do it ourselves or do we need a broker?

A gentleman in the Index Message Board questioned whether there is a time limit on the rollover of the IRA to the Roth. Any comments?

Thanks in advance and will deal with current 401k after this is complete.
