If you are uncomfortable bidding on priceline, subscribe to travel/hotel emails and start watching for deals where you are headed. Be sure to check the rates for the actual area and hotels on the dates you want to be able to compare.

Also, consider travel insurance which you would hope to never use but also check the terms of your credit card to see if there is already coverage there.

farecast.com can provide predictions on the way the airfare might be going. I've only recently started using it so no personal info on results.
