Yes yes, all those cats, dogs and pet roaches are nice, but they're making my two parrots a little nervous. I've loved birds almost all my life. In seventh grade I wrote an impressive report comparing birds to dogs (from initial cost to average vet bills) partially in an attempt to show my dad I knew enough to handle a bird.

Right now, I have Cookie, a cockatiel. A coworker was going around work telling everyone they looked like a cat person, and explained he found 3 kittens on the side of the road he wanted to find homes for. I said "no one in my apartment likes cats, but I'll take a bird if you have any." Turns out he did, and because of a new baby, it was being neglected. He's doing great now. I think Cockatiels are my favorite kind of parrot, they have the best psychotic personality!

Harley is my other bird. He's a loud obnoxious, funny, talking Nanday conure. (There was one on the movie Paulie.) My older sister found him for me from someone who had inherited the bird but couldn't handle him. (A future topic of this board -- including your pet in your will! Certain types of birds can live to 80 YEARS and longer!) I brought him home (to Texas) from Oregon on the plane. He's a frequent flier. (Hi Tony!) Does anyone else take their pet with them on the plane? and for what types of trips? I know it can stressful for them, but if I'm on vacation for a week or more, I would like to take Harley with me. Harley is amazing at picking up sounds and words. He says "What are you doing?", "Pretty birdie", "JUDY!" (my sister's name), and get this, "Here kitty, kitty". I LOVE it when he coughs and sneezes (often in response to my coughing/sneezing). His previous owner had asthma, and I can hear the old lady's poor coughs every time he does it.

Wonderful sources of information for me has been Bird Talk, a magazine and the city's local bird club.

Julia, Harley and Cookie
