This is how my elder bother's nearsightedness was discovered--and that of many other kids.

My brother's vision problem, as well as mine, was discovered when teachers sent home notes saying that we couldn't read the board even when seated in the front row. Each time my mother, outraged at receiving a note implying she was a bad parent, dragged us off to the eye doctor, expecting to hear that we could see and had no problems.

Instead, the doctor, first with my brother and later with me, said that we needed glasses, since we couldn't see anything.

I don't know why she was so certain I didn't need glasses; she'd already been through this with my brother.
