Years ago there was a process of getting the initial share of stock for $20 or so. That may not be possible any more.
It sounds as if the significant cost is the process of getting the first paper certificate in order to enroll in a direct purchase plan.
I am wondering whether the best approach might be selecting a broker with a low minimum account size and a friendly dividend reinvestment provision.
