This recommendation came from a book on uses for baking soda.

De-grease and clean barbecue grills by applying baking soda as a paste with a wire brush. Let set for 15 minutes, then wipe clean and let the grill fire burn away any residue before adding food to the grill's surface.

I just took a book back to the library this morning that also stated use baking soda to clean a grill. Can't remember the specs though.
