This was the first thing I did, as I once got a wonderful job this way a long time ago. The results have been nightmarish to say the least, so onward I go.

I am going suggest something radical and maybe not so intuitve. Go visit your local DOL Career Center. Many states have employment resources designed to support self-employed individuals, and many of the people who pass through there are more than the minimum wage blue collar stereotypes.
