This week I had to tell a co-worker that a comment they made really bothered me. I was talking about how I was so glad that I have a rare Sunday off from work, so I could go to church. They laughed and said, "You go to church? Right."

I find that it helps to have a stash of witty retorts for situations like this--comments that will give everyone a good laugh and diffuse the situation.

Something like "Yeah, I think even God was surprised last time I showed up." Or, "I'm a stealth churchgoer; keeps the pastor on his toes."

There is a time to take offense at comments, but sometimes it is more effective just to laugh at yourself and move on.
