This won't happen again if I can help it. Also, I'm going to find a different accountant. I love my old one, but he's in Tampa (2 hours away), and I just have a gut feeling that somehow he's...slipping a little. I already wondered about that, and the fact that I overpaid according to the IRS makes me think it's time to start looking for someone else.

I'd fire him if he didn't have you file for an extension. The overpayment thing is hard to calculate and if you were within a couple of hundred dollars of what you owed, it was as close as anyone was likely to get.

Since you seem to have more income than last year, you may want to acquaint yourself with the concept of safe harbor so that you don't get dinged with penalties this year.
