Those consession stands are EXPENSIVE.

That's because the bulk of the profits come from the consession stands.

We almost never snuck anything into the movie, but we were taught to never go there on an empty stomach.

Yeah, I stopped sneaking snacks into theaters when I hit college age and learned that. Movie theaters make little (if any) money off the ticket price. That goes to the distributor and then back to the film studio that released the print.

The way they make money is off the concession stands. I have to say, I've been a bit annoyed over the past several years, as *all* the local movie theaters (even the big multiplexes) have migrated away from "buckets" and towards "bags". The bags hold less popcorn than the buckets (so, a "small" bag is smaller than a "small" bucket). Then, all of them, across the board, raised prices at the same time they made their individual changeovers. But, I still buy popcorn and a drink when I go to the movies, because, I *want* the theaters to stay open.
