A coupla of memoirs of the time.

Thanks for the stories! I went to the preinduction physical with two things: a letter from a doctor from my childhood, saying I was asthmatic, and a note from my current eye doctor saying I saw double. The latter was very unspecific, and I didn't count on it.

But as I went through the process, they kept blowing off the asthma. I thought I was doomed to be drafted, until I finally found myself sitting in front of a guy who looked like a drill sergeant, and he barked at me "Do you see doubled only close up or at all ranges?"

I said "At all ranges." He picked up a rubber stamp, slammed it down on my papers, and barked "You are hermanently dis-hollified!"

I was classified 1Y, meaning I would not be drafted until they were calling up the geezers and the gimps.

At that point I was unwilling to seek conscientious objector status because I still bought the story that you had to have a religious objection to war, and I was an atheist. Soon after, I took the position that a personal moral objection was enough, and indeed many people got CO status that way. I also vowed that I would never criticize anyone for staying out of the Vietnam war by any means whatsoever.

Oh, and a week later I got my private pilot's license, passing a physical examination that was mostly about visual acuity. Go figure.
