If they can, do they get the credit for cash tuition paid only, or the amount taken out as loan BY STUDENT also qualifies?

So, if the student takes out the loan it does not count as tuition paid by the parents taking the deduction, but if the parents take out a PLUS loan it then does count toward tuition paid?
