TOday I asked my son, a middle school science teacher in MA, if he felt teaching was still a good field to go into. He says it is, as long as you understand that not everyone can succeed in the field--it's hard to be talking loudly, "on" and helping 150 students all day, going over lesson plans and communicating with parents in the evening, creating projects and tests and grading over the weekend (that's how he spent much of his holiday weekend). Plus the benefits and working conditions aren't as good as they used to be. He loathes time lost to NCLB testing. It happens in May and it is very difficult to get the students back on track to learning afterwards--especially in his non-air-conditioned school. He still enjoys it, but looks forward to summer break as much as the kids do. Helps that he's not teaching science in the Bible Belt or at a charter school, and that he is teaching in a middle/upper middle class community that values education and where almost all of the students go to college and want to get good grades.
