Media Metrix' Top 50 Home Software Rankings: 
The Only Real-Time, Actual Software Usage Data

RealNetworks' RealPlayer and Mirabilis Have Highest Gains in Number of Home PC Users

Media Metrix, The PC Meter Company, today announced its quarterly ranking of 
the Top 50 most-used software applications among PC users at home.

Media Metrix is the only source of real-time, actual software usage at an 
installed base level, unlike previous rankings of application and utility 
software products that are based on sales of product through retail channels. 
With its patented PC Meter(TM) technology, Media Metrix delivers the first-ever 
software rankings based on what people actually use, as opposed to proxy 
indicators of what was purchased or what people remember they used.

Among home PC users, RealNetworks RealPlayer gained 4.4 million unique users 
since the first quarter 1998 and jumped to number ten from number 24 among the 
most used home software applications in the second quarter. Mirabilis ICQ 
gained 2.8 million unique users in the second quarter and rose to number 27 
from 39 in the first quarter. Other software applications with large second 
quarter gains in unique visitors include Microsoft's Outlook Express (rose to 
number 22 from 33, gaining 2.4 million unique users), Network Associates' 
VirusScan (jumped to 35 from number 53, or 2.4 million unique users), Microsoft 
OutLook (jumped to 36 from 52, or 1.7 million people) and Microsoft Greetings 
Workshop (jumped from 76 to 38, or 1.4 million people).

Beyond the World Wide Web, Media Metrix provides invaluable insight into how 
people are actually using their computers - the patented PC Meter(TM) measures 
audience usage of the World Wide Web, proprietary online services, other ad-
supported applications and software and hardware ownership and usage. The PC 
Meter works with the computer operating system to track and measure actual, 
real-time PC usage data. Media Metrix maintains detailed demographic 
information for each PC user and can therefore cross-tabulate usage and

Media Metrix "Top 50 Software Used" Definitions: Reach Definition & Examples: 
For software usage, reach is the percent of Windows-based PC users that used 
the application or utility software once in the given month. Individuals who 
used application or utility software are unduplicated (not counted twice). For 
example, if a game software title has a 2% usage reach that means that 2% of 
all PC using individuals used that game title within the given month.

Sample Size: More than 28,000 PC-using individuals throughout the U.S. 
participate in the Media Metrix At Home sample. (Media Metrix also maintains a 
separate sample of business PC users.)
