tpaul, I already have an appointment with PSEG to replace the gas valve. They'll be here next week. If they ask, I was considering allowing them to just add a new shutoff valve rather than replace the main one, since I figure it's extra tricky to replace the overall house valve (you need to shut off gas at the street somewhere?). But if you don't think that would be sufficient, I'll insist they replace it.

But don't mistake my lack of discussion on that topic to mean I'm ignoring it... I can just take it from here :)

Back to the water, I've spent a lot of time looking before, and I spent another 15 minutes just now. There are no pipes anywhere I can see coming out of the top of that wall. There are, however, 3 pipes coming out/going it of the wall to the left of that picture behind the washer/dryer. They do so at about the height of the ball valve.

However, I can account for all of them. One is the same cold water line that feeds into the HWH - logically that would hook up to the upper valve somewhere. The second is the hot water line coming out of the HWH (I figure it feeds in to the wall in order to run upstairs to the bathrooms). And the third is the output from the boiler.

I suppose it's possible that one or more of those connect to the ball valve line. The mostly likely does appear to be the boiler, as was originally suggested, but there's the separate hookup between the water system and the boiler for in the room with the boiler and HWH. Per the diagrams for my boiler in the manual, the filler line should go into the boiler infeed, not the outflow, and that's what's going on in the boiler room. This would be the wrong one.

Still nothing from the sellers. If I don't hear in another day or two, I may email him directly rather than their agent. I do have his email address from another email exchange through their agent.
