Under our current plan I do not believe that we have the choice of using the CREF mutual funds, just the annuities. This is my main motivation for looking into other plans. Is that the case at other institutions using TIAA-CREF?

Also, that link didn't really show any advantages to a 403(b) over a 401(k) which makes me think it would not be as difficult to get a switch if it is supported by employees. The only real advantage seems that you have more investing options. I guess you could still use an annuity if you really wanted.
