Universities are another source to cheap culture.

Ahem. "Cheap" may be a little ambiguous here.

But this is an excellent point. I live only a few miles from the University of North Carolina, and they have a fairly frequent concert schedule, which concerts are usually free to all. I've only been to one concert. On the one hand, I was glad to be in the audience for a change. On the other hand, the performance was a little rough, but it was still worth attending.

I expect the quality varies. UNC has their schedule of concerts online, and I want to attend some of the faculty recitals, which I'm sure would be much better.

I've found that volunteering with a professional organization produces better quality events than you get with student performers, but of course, if you volunteer, there is some work involved.
