Apparently there's a proposal from the Senate to reintroduce U.S. War Bonds for the first time since WWII. Though the details don't seem to have been finalized, this might be a good investment opportunity for bond seekers, as well as a sign of patriotic support in these troubled times.
http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/15/congress.terrorism/index.html has a short description at the bottom of the article.
I have some CDs and bonds reaching maturity next month. Perhaps the bonds will be ready by then so I can roll over the balances to them.

Thanks for the link. I have in fact been wondering if anyone would think of issuing something like a War Bond. (They were called Liberty Bonds in WW I.)
I would be absolutely fascinated to see a modern-day campaign for War Bonds. Although I think maybe they should come up with a different name. I think Liberty was a pretty cool name.

Sure, though it's still not clear whether they'll happen at all. The article linked from http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=15955403 talks some more about this. If you have money that's itching for a home, I-bonds might be just as good a place for it, right now.

Even the Treasury Department is giving the bonds idea a lukewarm response, although officials are careful to praise the "patriotic intent and sentiment" of the legislation's sponsors on Capitol Hill.
"A strong economy is perhaps our greatest asset as we move forward with this effort," said Treasury Department spokeswoman Tara Bradshaw. "We hope that consumers anxious to put their money to work for the nation will make the purchases planned before September 11 as consumer spending is vital to the economy."
